Guest post -Gorbachev dies, the Queen dies

I’m no monarchist, but I appreciate that Queen Elizabeth II was handed quite a job, to preside over the dismantling of the British Empire, to reconcile with the new Commonwealth and to be the symbol of the United Kingdom as it, and its former Empire transform itself.  I have little time for the vulgarians who…

What a difference a year makes: the green dream dies in Sri Lanka

The End is nigh for Vaccine mandates, etc, in New Zealand

The government has been losing ground in the polls recently.

The anti-mandate protest in Wellington, was violently ended by the Police recently, and this has had a profound effect on public opinion, even if the Government still refuses to acknowledge the protest at all.

That protest had 30% support from the public.

The vaccine passports, mandates, etc are now due to end on the 4 April as announced recently.

However, a lot of social damage has been done..

Given that the whole country went into a lockdown over a single case of delta last year, there’s little confidence out there that we won’t go thru the whole lockdown/mandate thing again on a whim.

The unvaxxed were marginalised and treated like lepers, and they aren’t going to forget easily.
I, for one, have a list of shops that will never see me again.

A parrallel economy?

Since the government effectively created a two class system in NZ (vaxxed and unvaxxed), This has led to the idea of taking measures to remove any influence the government has on a semi permanent basis.

For example, the ‘Voices For Freedom’ group setup and organised ‘Play On’ for unvaccinated children that got banned from participating in sport.

Another example is a growing number of small groups all over the country setting up community farms, vege markets, etc. this is due to expected food shortages, which are already starting to happen.

Some of them are also looking at ways of reducing their dependence on electricity supplies, by installing ‘off grid’ solar power systems

There is even talk about some sort of alternative currency, partly because of the fear of bank accounts been frozen as they were in Canada recently.

A lot of these people are also concerned with ‘the great reset’, ‘5G’, ‘digital currency’, etc.
These are usually seen as conspiracy theories by the average person here, but then again, that average person is walking around outside, wearing a mask…

I’m open minded about it all, because there’s just too much weird stuff going on at the moment.

How this will pan out for the future, I’m not sure, but it does certainly underline the lack of confidence and trust in the Government.

The way forward..

On a positive note, our local anti -mandate group has been organising low profile get togethers in a very public place’s.

The aim of these is just to get people used to the idea that maybe they don’t need to wear a mask, and that it’s OK to just chill out…

Omicron sweeps New Zealand

Omicron is all the rage in New Zealand with the number of cases in the tens of thousands
This has led to a few interesting observations during the week.

96% of the population are vaccinated, mostly with Pfizer. It obviously doesn’t do much at all to stop the spread.

The requirement for 24 days of self isolation got reduced to 10 days, but this hasn’t stopped supermarkets running low on stock.

They have now since reduced the self isolation time again, down to 7 days.
Also, Hospitals have been running out of staff, so they have started letting ‘mostly healthy’ staff work again.

(lets not forget that they laid off 1300 staff for not getting vaccinated in back in December, who may have been useful about now)

Meanwhile the Government and Fonterra (NZ’s largest company) are now back pedalling over forcing people out of their jobs.

This is partly because the Goverment lost a case in the High court last week.

On a personal note, I had covid last week. I spent a night talking to ‘Ralph’ on the great white telephone, and it only took a few days to get over it. For the record, I’m a healthy 55 yr old.

The Unvaccinated vs Vaccinated narrative

It’s been revealed recently that the NZ Government’s covid ‘Traffic Light” system was designed to punish the unvaccinated, rather than actually deal with covid.

This has led some to the conclusion that the unvaccinated are going to be used as scrap goats by the Government when the going gets rough.

However, a few inconvenient facts get in the way for anyone who thinks about this rationally (this can be rare when everyone has been losing their head around here)

1/            Perhaps 40% (note 1) of the population got vaccinated in the first place because they wanted to keep their job, go to University, go shopping, etc. In other words, they didn’t get the jab for their health, but for pragmatic reasons.

2/            The only way Omicron or Delta can be in NZ in the first place is via the vaccinated, because the unvaccinated aren’t allowed to travel internationally or be a border worker.

3/            Only the vaccinated are allowed to go to festivals, so who do you blame when positive cases start turning up?

Note 1 – In times of mass hysteria, 40% go along with the hysteria, rather than make a fuss
